Arriving at the al Baghdadiya compound, a trumpeter and two drummers sounded a welcome for Mr Zaidi – and in his honour, three sheep were slaughtered live on his own channel.
At his modest central Baghdad flat, his family prepared an exuberant and emotional welcome home.
They danced, they put up balloons and posters, and his young nephews and nieces practised a celebratory song – roughly translated as “Bush Bush listen well, we said goodbye with a pair of shoes”.
On the open corridor outside his flat, another sheep waited patiently for its end – six more were assembled down in the street.
As the day – and the heat – wore on, the family handed out soft drinks to waiting reporters.
Non-Muslims (and the non-observant) accepted eagerly – but for the rest it is Ramadan, and a fast is a fast, even if it is 40C (104F) in the shade.
But Mr Zaidi never turned up. Reporters dispersed, the family went back inside, and the six sheep in the street were taken away – leaving the one animal upstairs alone there again with its bowl of water.
Not all Iraqis admire him – may thought his gesture was rude and unjustified.
According to Arab tradition, throwing shoes and calling the intended target a dog was a double insult.

The senior American commander in Iraq has told the BBC that he is concerned that the country will be forgotten, amid the current focus on Afghanistan.
Gen Ray Odierno said troop numbers in Iraq would stay at that level until after elections in January next year.
He suggested there was always a risk that the security situation in Iraq could deteriorate and said he wanted to finish what had been started.
The US has 130,000 troops in Iraq, almost twice the number in Afghanistan.
The US troop count is due to drop quickly to about 50,000 by this time next year
We have spent a lot of money here. We’ve spent a lot of lives here, both the US and the UK. So we have an opportunity. It’s important to see this through,” Gen Odierno said.
“I concern myself that people don’t forget about Iraq, and what we’re trying to accomplish here, but I am confident in the leadership that I have – that they understand the importance of Iraq.”
BBC Baghdad correspondent Andrew North says that Gen Odierno was choosing his words with care. But he was giving a clear message, that with the situation still fragile here, the US cannot leave Iraq early.
Gen Odierno said risks remained though Iraqis had rejected al-Qaeda, the militias and “ethno-sectarian violence”.
“The problem is, there’s still attacks on the civilians here in Iraq, there’s attacks against the government of Iraq, all aimed at destabilising the government itself, and the political process.”
The general said he was particularly concerned also about corruption.
“The endemic corruption within the Iraqi system – not only the security forces, but the system – is still probably the biggest problem facing Iraq.
“I think the ministry of defence and ministry of interior probably are taking more action than most other ministries right now, so I’m confident that they’re on the right path.”

So Israelis are not on the edge of their seats hoping that President Barack Obama can, despite all the difficulties, create a new peace process or revive an old one. Instead they are sceptical, and cynical about anything other than more of the same.
Most people are much more concerned about Iran and its nuclear plans than about Palestinians, who are a known, containable commodity. The Iranians are much more worrying.
I am sitting writing this in the shade of some pine trees in the Jewish settlement of Kiryat Arba in the occupied West Bank. All the houses around me are illegal under international law.
If anything, the Palestinians who think all of this occupied land should be theirs are even more cynical and sceptical about peace than the Israelis.
Many Palestinians are convinced that history’s lesson is that Israelis are out to steal their land. Not just the soil and rock, but the water underneath it too.
Plenty of Palestinians say that they prefer it when seemingly harder-line right-wingers like the current Israeli prime minister are in power.
The left, they say, are good at deceiving foreigners but they are just as determined to take land as the rightists.
For more than 15 years, on and off, Palestinians have watched leaders on the TV talking about peace.

The Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at former US President George W Bush says he was tortured by senior government officials while in jail.
Shortly after his release from nine months in a Baghdad prison, Muntadar al-Zaidi demanded an apology – and said he would name the officials later.
Iraqi officials told the BBC his claims should be investigated.
His protest last December made him a hero for many people. He was convicted of assaulting a foreign leader.
Initially, he was sentenced to three years in jail.
But he had the term reduced to 12 months on appeal and was released three months early for good behaviour.
After his release on Tuesday he told journalists: “I am free again, but my homeland is still a prison.”
Reuters news agency reported he was slurring his speech because of a missing tooth.
He went on to say he had suffered beatings, whippings, electric shocks and simulated drowning at the hands of officials and guards.
“At the time that Prime Minister Nouri Maliki said on television that he could not sleep without being reassured on my fate… I was being tortured in the worst ways, beaten with electric cables and iron bars,” he said.
He demanded an apology from Mr Maliki and said he would name the officials who tortured him in due course.
my relatives and people close to me that these services will use all means to trap and try to kill and liquidate me either physically, socially or professionally,” he said.
His allegations of abuse mirror claims made earlier by his family, who said he had been beaten, suffering a broken arm, broken ribs and internal bleeding.
The Iraqi military earlier denied the allegations, but following Zaidi’s news conference Sami Al Askari, an adviser to Mr Maliki, said his torture claims should be investigated.
Zaidi’s family has been preparing to throw a party for him.
He has reportedly received offers of money, jobs and even marriage from across the Arab world.
His relatives say he was offered a golden horse by the Emir of Qatar.

It has taken four months for the Pakistani army to launch an operation in the volatile tribal region of South Waziristan.
What held the army back and what can the security forces expect now?
The announcement that a ground offensive had been ordered was first made in June and troops have been gathering on the border since then.
The four-month delay enabled the militants to overcome the reverses they had suffered in the Malakand region during the summer, and to hit back at the government with added force.
Hundreds of people have been killed in scores of militant attacks during this period.
The militants also suffered setbacks. Former Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud was killed in a suspected US drone strike in August.
His death led some security analysts to suggest that there was now no need for a full-blown operation, and that small-scale, localised action would take care of the menace.
But despite army rhetoric about why a timeframe could not be put on any South Waziristan assault, the authorities have decided that now is the time to attack the militants in their stronghold.
Subsequently, during informal briefings held by the army’s top brass for members of the media, the officials spelt out a range of other reasons why the Waziristan operation could not proceed in time.
The impression conveyed was that the country’s civilian government had not been quick enough to rehabilitate the system of administration in other areas cleared of militants.
These officials cited the example of the operation in Swat and other areas of Malakand region.
They said that despite the success of that operation, launched in early June, the government had failed to beef up the local police force or fill the judicial vacuum.
As a result, the army was not able to free up troops for operations in other areas, the argument went.
The army there continues to be involved in combating remnants of militant groups for fear that, if it thins its presence, the gunmen may stage a comeback
In addition, the army in Malakand was weighed down by the “logistical burden” of about 8,000 arrested militants.
Officials said the army was holding these militants because police could not cope with such a number.
Furthermore, the courts and anti-terrorism laws are inadequate to carry out trials, or achieve convictions.
This loss of time delayed the South Waziristan operation right up to the winter, which is now setting in and which officials have in their briefings discounted as a suitable time an operation.

On Tuesday, Israel’s Security Cabinet hardened the country’s rejection of an independent inquiry.
Earlier reports said discussion about setting up an inquiry had been on the agenda of the meeting, which brings together seven ministers with security responsibilities.
However, an official said it was blocked by Defence Minister Ehud Barak, an architect of Israel’s winter onslaught, supported by Benjamin Netanyahu, who was elected prime minister in March.
Both men have called the UN report one-sided and said it undermined Israel’s right to defend itself. They argue internal investigations by the Israeli military are already dealing with a small number of violations.
“Our struggle is to delegitimize the continuing attempt to delegitimize the state of Israel. The most important sphere we need to work in is the sphere of public opinion in the democratic world,” Mr Netanyahu was quoted telling the cabinet.
Foreign and justice ministry officials are reported to favour setting up an investigation in the hope of defusing an international row which is widely seen to have done damage to Israel’s reputation.
Instead, ministers agreed on the establishment a legal-diplomatic panel to handle any possible war crimes prosecutions against Israel or its citizens.
Separately, Palestinian Authority President and Fatah party leader Mahmoud Abbas has been holding talks in Cairo with Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak.
It is the latest in a long-running process attempting to reach a reconciliation deal between Fatah and the other main Palestinian faction, Hamas.
Aides of Mr Abbas have accused Hamas, which runs Gaza, of shirking a commitment to sign the Egyptian-mediated agreement after Fatah signed it.
Hamas says it will sign the document as long as there are no clauses added that have not been agreed.
It said its previous request for a postponement was to give it time to study new Egyptian proposals, and to comment on the Goldstone report.
