Often, fashion trends focus on a very specific demographic. A very, young, very thin demographic. And to be honest, we aren’t willing to define beauty in those terms — beautiful women can be found at any age, and at any size. Sometimes, though, they just need a little help figuring out how to best flaunt what they’ve got.

This week, we’re once again seeking celebrity inspiration when it comes to flattering your figure, but now, we’re focusing on women of a certain age. Fifty can be fashionable, and sixty can be sexy — don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.Flatter Your Figure … At Any Age

SHOW: Costello TagliapetraMAKEUP: Mark Carrasquilla for M.A.CBEAUTY SNAPSHOT: 50s painted face meets 70s punkTHE SCOOP: Makeup artist Mark Carrasquilla described the look he created for the show as “a big mix of decades. It’s a 50s style really drawn-on woman with the thick arched eyebrows. We wanted to make her a little tougher, more fun and younger so we decided to add a 1979 punk eyeliner. We topped off the look with a brown lip to play off the rust colors in the collection.” While the runway version is too extreme for everyday wear, a few small changes in application and it becomes an easy new option for fall. Carrasquilla suggests you “size down the eyeliner and bring it closer to the lash line to make it more user friendly.” The lipstick at the show was matte and applied a bit heavy handedly for dramatic effect, but to take the color off the runway simply “blot your lips after you apply and then rub it in a bit with your finger. It gets very beautiful and not as harsh as it is right from the tube.” GET THE LOOK MAKEUP: M.A.C Liquie Eyeliner, Lipstick in Paramount For the skin use Invisible Set Powder and 8 Hour Cream to add a pretty sheer glow to your cheekbones and eyelids.

Some of my most satisfying moments have been spent at tag sales, digging through boxes of vintage sewing patterns. But you don’t have to leave your house to find a great selection. Scores of vintage patterns and reproductions are available online – and often for less than the price of current patterns.

The Real Thing: For some of the largest collections of truly vintage patterns, check out MomsPatterns.com; SoVintagePatterns.com; and VintageMartini.com. You’ll find everything from Edwardian to ’60s retro styles. Tip: Sizing varies from decade to decade, so check measurements carefully. Beautiful Reproductions: Many of the big pattern companies (Vogue, Butterick, Simplicity) have collections of reproduced patterns. The great thing is that, unlike the aforementioned instructions, these have modern sizing and pattern symbols, while still keeping the original style. Indie Designs: Some boutique pattern makers are honing their craft by raiding the archives. For the just-right retro feel, look into some of the indie vintage reproduction patterns. Decades of Style is great for adults while Oliver + S. provides adorable options for stylish little tykes. Vintage Freebies: There are also free vintage patterns out there for the downloading. Go to the SewRetro blog to get started. For adorably easy vintage apron patterns, click here. Pattern giveaways for children’s clothing are at HeirloomSewingforChildren.com.Vintage patterns are often gorgeously crafted and wonderful markers of simple and elegant sewing techniques. They are reflective of fashion’s history with each envelope containing a lesson in style. I love owning them and browsing though my collection, whether I plan to stitch them up or not.

Classic Jewelry by Caroline Henry

Jewelry designer Caroline Henry creates beautiful, timeless jewelry pieces, including some absolutely stunning gemstone rings. This New York City based artist got her start designing jewelry in the mid 1970s while studying in India and Indonesia. We recently caught up with her to find out more about her work.

Tell us a little about yourself and your work. My name is Caroline Henry and I am a jewelry designer living and working in New York City. I have been making jewelry for many years now. I got started as a serious designer in the early 90’s and am still working at it! I love what I do. It is so satisfying.

What inspires your work? I am very inspired by bold shapes, colored stones and precious metals.

Who are your favorite designers? One of my favorite designers is Marchesa, gown designer to the stars! I love Chrome Hearts. Their jewelry is fantastic and another favorite of mine is Cathy Waterman.

What are your top fashion & beauty must-haves? My favorite must have items are, a great pair of shoes and a wonderful lipstick. And of course a fantastic piece of jewelry!!!

Any advice you would give to aspiring designers? I would advise any aspiring designer to stick it out even if you are rejected by some and times are hard like they are now. Never go against your creativity!

Where can people find your work? You can find me at www.chenry.etsy.com

We love all of the amazing independent designers out there and we wanted to find out more about what makes these creative types tick. If you do too, check out more of our Indie Designer Interviews.

Valentine's Day was last week, but if you still need to get a little something for your sweetie, look no further than the darling collection of charms from Links of London, which are sure to melt even the coldest/most disappointed heart.
The company, which started out with a pair of fish cufflinks in 1990, now offers a dizzying array of charms. Imagine an occasion, hobby, or initial, and you can find it in sterling silver or 18k gold. And for a little bit (okay, a lot) more, you can find some of the special designs tricked out in white gold and diamonds. That's what we call extra-lucky charms.

One of the latest additions to the line include the Flutter & Wow collection, a series of sculptural heart designs that manage to be both modern and delicate at the same time.

Still, we always find ourselves back at the charms, shopping for the next addition to our already super-heavy bracelet. Links of London has so many fun ones, and we want them all!

Ann Taylor, you are unstoppable.

With your relaunch, edgy fashion and big name models — what could be next? Underwear? Well, as it turns out, yes.

Lingerie brand Eberjey is launching an exclusive line called Bluebird by Eberjey exclusively at Ann Taylor starting Feb. 2. The collection will consist of three groups that will include two bralets, one camisole and nine panty styles available in 10 colors, ranging in price from $16 to $36.

“We are excited to partner with Eberjey and introduce our clients to beautiful, feminine lingerie with gorgeous details and flattering fits. By exclusively carrying Bluebird by Eberjey, we will continue to enhance the Ann Taylor shopping experience and offer another layer of chic, sophisticated style,” an Ann Taylor spokesperson told StyleList.

“This is the first time Ann Taylor is getting into lingerie,” Mariela Rovito, president and co-founder of Eberjey told WWD. “The line is aimed at the existing Ann Taylor customer, but that customer is changing a bit. They are aiming at a different direction and looking at a younger customer.”

And from the looks of the collection, she doesn’t mind being a bit sexy, yet still tastefully feminine.

For a more overtly sexy vibe, see this lingerie company’s topless bikini (as in the swimwear).

For Episode 7 of “Project Runway,” it’s was to 10 designers and the stakes were high.

In the challenge, the contestants had to work in pairs and create two looks in blue that reflect Macy’s I.N.C International Concepts brand. Even better, the winner will get to design a dress for Macy’s I.N.C holiday collection.

While everyone was psyched about the opportunity to create for a name brand (”This is the best challenge that any designer could ever hope for,” said Irina Shabayeva ), they weren’t thrilled about working in teams. This was evident when the pairs ran around willy-nilly at Mood trying to choose fabric.

The twosomes didn’t exactly gel for the most part. Edwardian-leaning team leader Louise Black and no-nonsense Nicolas Putvinski were especially mismatched, mostly due to Louise’s penchant for ruffles. “I hate ruffles. I believe that ruffles were made to hide flaws,” Putvinski declared disdainfully.

Likewise, team leader Irina Shabayeva and Gordana Gelhausen are like oil and water. “She doesn’t give me any direction. She just says: ‘I don’t like it,’” Gelhausen complained.

Only team leader Christopher Straub and Epperson, both of whom did well in last week’s movie-themed challenge, seem to have any sort of synergy, “I think that Epperson and I are the dream team,” Straub declared, “I think we’ll take this one.”

When Tim Gunn makes his workroom appearance, he only says that the designers have an opportunity for “serious reinvention” — not exactly a ringing endorsement.

And as far as judging, team chemistry was definitely not an indicator of winning or losing. Shabayeva walked away with her second win in the competition with her floaty striped chevron sundress and shirred light blue top with navy skirt, but not before slightly throwing Gelhausen under the bus.

Surprisingly, Carol Hannah Whitfield and Shirin Askari took second place with bland and poorly sewn pieces. Shabayeva had earlier dismissed them as “discount store.”

And Straub and Epperson were severely taken to task — for their striped shirtdress and shiny tunic — by returning judge Michael Kors, who gave his critique with particular zeal: “The shirtdress looks like a tablecloth and the teal charmeuse looks like a disco pumpkin. Did you think they went together? They don’t.” Straub, heartbreakingly burst into tears, from shock, no doubt.

Black also was berated for her overuse of ruffles. Kors dismissed one particularly ruffled look with, “This looks like a bridesmaid dress with shower sponge ruched up the front.”

It looked like both Straub and Black would be going. “I honestly don’t know what was worse — the disco pumpkin or the shower curtain nightie,” Heidi Klum opined. But in the end, only Black took the final bow for her overly frilly dresses.

Heidi Klum pronounced Black’s team member Putvinski to be “very lucky.” He had seemed content with his immunity to sit back and let Black sink. Straub’s past accomplishments no doubt played into his stay.

Check out Shabayeva’s holiday dress at Macys.com/projectrunway.

Tune into “Project Runway” Thursdays at 10 PM ET/PT on LIfetime, then catch our post-show recap here.

The book ‘Invasion of the Bristlebots,’ by Pat Murphy, is set to be published by Klutz and Scholastic in April. The publisher says the book was already in the works prior to the December 2007 blog posts in which Evil Mad Scientist first wrote about so-called BristleBots.

Afterwards, Scholastic put the same statement up on its public blog.

(Credit:Windell H. Oskay, www.evilmadscientist.com)

When it comes to whimsy, there’s no doubt that the concept of a “bristlebot,” a combination robot and toothbrush, is dripping with it.

In response to a request for comment on this story, Kyle Good, Scholastic vice president of corporate communications, wrote in an e-mail on Thursday that “Klutz is genuinely surprised by this reaction to our book. The development of ‘Invasion of the Bristlebots’ by the Klutz creative team dates back to at least early 2007 and was developed internally, like other Klutz products. In light of this misunderstanding, we’re contacting the folks at Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories in the interest of addressing the concerns that have been raised.”

For now, this is all the information that is available. Stay tuned, however, as I plan to have a more in-depth story on this controversy on Monday morning.

The BristleBot is a simple and tiny robot with an agenda. The ingredients? One toothbrush, a battery, and a pager motor. The result? Serious fun. The BristleBot is our take on the popular vibrobot, a simple category of robot that is controlled by a single vibrating (eccentric) motor. Some neat varieties include the mint-tin version, as seen in Make Magazine (check the video) and the kid’s art bot: a vibrobot with pens for feet.

However, the folks at Evil Mad Scientist seem to be insisting that the bristlebot was their invention. As they wrote on their site Thursday, “We were never contacted by Klutz (or Scholastic), which we find surprising, being that we are the instigators of the current brush-based vibrobot movement and the coiners of the term bristlebot.”

But as was discovered at the Toy Fair, a new book from Klutz and Scholastic publishing by author Pat Murphy, called “Invasion of the Bristlebots,” is covering what seems to be exactly the same ground.

A ‘bristlebot’ is a combination of a small robot and a toothbrush. There is now a controversy over who created the concept, as an inventor called Evil Mad Scientist first wrote about bristlebots in late 2007, and there now comes a book from Klutz and Scholastic titled ‘Invasion of the Bristlebots,’ which makes no reference to Evil Mad Scientist.
