DIY Design: Where to Find the Best Buttons

Getty Images

Whether you are making your own outfits or just sprucing up a ready-to-wear piece, a great button can make all the difference. There’s no need to settle for the run-of-the-mill closures when you have plenty places to buy from. Here are some of my favorite sources:

For uniqueness: If you are looking for quality, then go vintage. There is an extensive collections on BJ’s Lapidary; Cartwrights’s Sequins and Vintage Buttons, and especially eBay. For an offbeat selection: Whether it’s a porcelain polka-dot teapot, a silver trout or a set of domino buttons that you are seeking, you’ll find an unusual selection at Dana Marie. You can even buy buttons by the pound. Buy handmade: Search for “handmade buttons for sewing” on Etsy.com and you’ll land on over 5,000 options, from hand-painted to wooden to custom-covered. The supplier: JHB is big in the button world. Browse their wholesale site to see the complete catalog but you’ll need to call them to find out where to buy the closure that you crave. Beautiful buttons: This site really does live up to its name. Beautiful Buttons is based out of Mississippi and chock-full of interesting options. It is also a wholesale site, but you can just call to find out where to purchase. Real Bad Kitty: This boutique takes buttons beyond functional purposes and reinterprets them into fun accessories. Check out their bridal bouquets, bobby pins, Easter button trees and more. Worth the trip: If you are ever within spitting distance of Manhattan, Tender Buttons is the best shop, like, ever. For more DIY Design columns, click here. DIY Hair Color, Yay or Nay – Tip of the Day!

We were lucky enough to score an interview with some lovely ladies, Nikki and Riawna, from the Ken Paves Salon in Hollywood. Between the two of them, they have tons of experience, an amazing knowledge bank on the topic, and a crazy client list to boot (think Lindsay Lohan, Colin Farrell, and Eva Longoria). So I rolled what we got from these two into a week’s worth of tips so you can look like you just walked out of the Ken Paves Salon.

In the wake of the recession many of us are turning to at-home color to keep up with our hair maintenance on a dime. But Riawna and Nikki say no way! “Nine times out of ten it doesn’t work,” Riawna says. “We just don’t recommend it. Too many times women have damaged their own hair doing it.” And it’s not just a marketing ploy to get you into the salon. Here’s why you should either not color your hair period or splurge on a trip to the salon.

“If you’re brown and you want a darker brown, okay, not a big deal,” says Nikki. “But the at home stuff is so strong that it doesn’t come out and is very hard for a stylist to remove.”

“And most at-home kits use 20 volume developers which is used to cover grays. Most people, unless they really are gray, don’t need a color that harsh. Not even close!” says Riawna.

“Look, people do at-home color for two reasons. For financial reasons or because they have gray hair.” says Nikki. “If you’re going to an honest colorist, they need to set you up with a color that will suit your lifestyle.”

“Exactly,” says Riawna. “Say, ‘I can only come in every 10 weeks. ‘ I wouldn’t set someone up with a full head of highlights or something that grows out if they tell me that. You need to sit down and have a consultation. As a paying client, you need to demand it!”

“And,” adds Nikki, “if you don’t want the maintenance, can’t afford it, and don’t have grays, have your stylist dye your hair back to its natural color and let it grow out. It’s so much better than doing it yourself.”

CK “Face” makeup – Tip of the day!

We recently saw a CK ad and, literally, said aloud, “Holy crap is that makeup marvelous!” So obviously, we investigated. The CK “Face” collection is brand new and goes hand in hand with the CK girl’s wardrobe – minimal yet modern. Even cooler is the fact that they pull many of the makeup shades right off of the runway, converting trendy fabrics and hues into colors for the “Face.”

If you log onto Sephora you can browse the collection, get some cool tips and tricks, and even see precisely how the artist did the model’s makeup to really wrap you head around that CK look. As if that weren’t enough, you can also buy a kit (Vivid is pictured) that includes matching makeup and anything you could possibly need to recreate the look.

We don’t know what’s going on or why Calvin Klein is inundating our brains lately, but we like it!

Charming Charms from Links of London
Valentine's Day was last week, but if you still need to get a little something for your sweetie, look no further than the darling collection of charms from Links of London, which are sure to melt even the coldest/most disappointed heart.
The company, which started out with a pair of fish cufflinks in 1990, now offers a dizzying array of charms. Imagine an occasion, hobby, or initial, and you can find it in sterling silver or 18k gold. And for a little bit (okay, a lot) more, you can find some of the special designs tricked out in white gold and diamonds. That's what we call extra-lucky charms.

One of the latest additions to the line include the Flutter & Wow collection, a series of sculptural heart designs that manage to be both modern and delicate at the same time.

Still, we always find ourselves back at the charms, shopping for the next addition to our already super-heavy bracelet. Links of London has so many fun ones, and we want them all!

Charm Bracelets Grow Up
It's time to fess up: We've become obsessed with charm bracelets. We love the idea of a fully customizable piece of jewelry that you can build on as the years go on. Isn't that more romantic than a cookie-cutter bracelet? Imagine giving (or getting) one on Valentine's day, and adding charms as your relationship grows -- through new jobs, births, and the countless celebrations to come. It beats a box of chocolates by a mile!

However, most of the charm bracelets we've seen are decidedly targeted to a younger woman -- they look better on the wrist of a tween on her way to English class than on us. But then we saw the Pandora bracelet; finally there's a charm bracelet worthy of a woman!

Charlotte Russe may be known for its trendy teen fashion, but that doesn’t mean they’re junior league when it comes to doing business.

Private equity firm Advent International Corp. announced that it has finalized its purchase of the retailer.

But fear not Charlotte Russe fans — the new owner has appointed a pro to lead the way.

Advent’s managing director, David Mussafer, reassured investors today with the following statement:

“We believe partnering with our Operating Partner and the former President of Old Navy Jenny Ming will help Charlotte Russe build on its recent progress and grow for the benefit of its customers, employees and other stakeholders.”

Advent International isn’t the only company making moves in this economy.

This luxury house got creative with its layoffs.

Broken Hearts Club Paris
The Broken Hearts Club, a regular party in Berlin, has a special Paris edition planned for Jan 25th during Fashion Week. Henrik Vibskov, Fetish (Gigolo Rec. TNT), DJ KAOS (DFA/TNT), Karl-Oskar (Wood Wood) and other guests will each hit the decks to play their 10 favorite, love songs. Sadly, it's by invitation only, so we're sworn to secrecy on the details. But a clever person, like yourself, could probably find a way to email an invite request to the right place.

For Britney Spears’ second year as the face of Candie’s, the company is kicking things up a notch by enlisting three top fashion photographs, Terry Richardson, Annie Leibovitz and Mark Seliger, to shoot the pop star.

In what Candie’s is dubbing “Britney Spears Through The Lens,” the Spring 2010 campaign has each famed photographer taking their turn at shooting the pop princess in their own signature style.

Portraiture master Leibovitz put a black dress-clad Spears in front of an stark grey backdrop, while Seliger’s goal was to “create an iconic photograph” by way of a sultry-yet-fun “Moulin Rogue” scene in an uber-girly dressing room and he also shot Spears reclining on a Harley-Davidson motorcyle.

Risqué shutterbug Richardson photographed Spears dancing to Prince while in a bikini against his trademark all-white background (naturally) and gave her some fun props, such as roller-skates and a bundle of red roses.

“I have this dream hit list of people I want to photograph and Britney’s been on it forever,” said Richardson in a behind-the-scenes video of his shoot. “It’s really exciting because it’s sort of a dream fully realized and I’m able to put the notch on the belt.”

Spears, for her part, was also hyped to work with the photographers.

“Annie, Mark and Terry are three of the biggest photographers in the world. I am honored to be working with them for my Candies Only at Kohl’s ads,” the star said in a statement. ” It was an amazing shoot and I know my fans are going to love the cool images.”

As for singer’s favorite Candie’s product, she said in the below behind-the-scenes video: “I actually like the dresses. They are very fitting and very flattering.”

Expect to see the ads in the April issue of Seventeen.

Which photographer do you think rocked it hardest? Let us know in a comment.
