Just another WordPress weblog

I know nothing gets between Brooke Shields and her Calvins, but who knew the actress was also a big Pamella Roland fan?

The green eyed goddess (yes, she’s still gorgeous in person) sat front row at the show. I asked the actress to share her best fashion tips for all the fellow moms out there. If you’d like to look as good as Shields, heed her three style tips for moms:

1. Pick the right dress.
Shields relies on two classic cuts for dresses that not only hide a few extra pounds, but also can be thrown on in a hurry: “There are certain shapes,” Shields says, when asked what types of clothes are good for moms. ” A-line and wrap dresses.”

2. Give yourself a break.

No one expects a new mom to look perfect, so don’t be your own worst critic. “It’s taken you a really long time to get that baby, so don’t expect to be rail thin right now, or maybe ever,” Shields says. “A lot of people want to instantly lose weight and I say… give yourself a break.”

3. Cute shoes are never comfortable.
When I asked if Shields has any tips for comfortable shoes, she says, “It’s never about comfort. It really has nothing to do with comfort,” she laughs. “Actually,” she adds later, “A platform shoe to me is the most comfortable.” Even so, Shields makes no qualms about her love of pretty shoes — comfort be damned! “I don’t care how uncomfortable and how high — as long as they’re gorgeous, I love ‘em!”

Balenciaga Sues Steve Madden Over 'LEGO' Heels

Balenciaga's 'LEGO' heel (left) vs. Steve Madden's multicolored buckle heel (right). Photo: www.heels.com

Steve Madden may have to reconsider its designer-inspired shoes.

After being sued by Alexander McQueen earlier this year, the trendy mass shoemaker is now facing a copyright infringement suit over Balenciaga's "LEGO" heels, reports Cityfile.

The French luxury house slapped Madden with the lawsuit in the U.S. District Court of Eastern New York.

According to the court documents, soon after Balenciaga's multicolored peep-toe heels from the Fall 2007 collection were released, Steve Madden issued its own (more affordable) look-alike version, says the source.

As part of its courtroom argument, Balenciaga points to Madden's alleged shady past: "Defendant Steve Madden's reputation for producing knock-offs of full price luxury designs further corroborates Defendant's deliberate pattern of willful infringement and unfair competition."

While, we're all for wallet-friendly fashion, has Madden gone too far with this runway replica?

How do you feel about lower-priced labels taking inspiration directly from high-end designers? Leave a comment!

Lawsuits have clearly been in style this year. Check out other fashionable courtroom dramas of 2009.

MAKEUP: Kristin Gallegos
HAIR: David Colvin for Arrojo
SNAPSHOT: Gothic Avengers

THE SCOOP: For her debut collection, Katie Gallagher, an alum of RISD, Anna Sui and ThreeAsFour, went goth and glamorous with a line of all black clothing. Skin was pale, and eyes were blocked out with black cream shadow from lash lines to brow bones. “It’s not so spring, which makes it refreshing,” said Gallegos. The hair was center-parted and slicked back into a tight chignon to put the focus squarely on the clothing.

GET THE LOOK – MAKEUP: Gallegos used Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage only where it was needed to perfect the skin, topped off with Le Metier de Beaute Loose Powder for a matte finish. To black out the eyes, she used Make Up For Ever Grease Paint with Le Metier de Beaute Eye Shadow in Noir patted on top. M.A.C. Lipstick in Bing was rubbed on the center of the bottom lip, punctuating the goth look.

GET THE LOOK – HAIR:
“To keep the focus on the clothing, we kept that hair pretty natural looking,” said Colvin. “Like they did it themselves.” Colvin worked Arrojo Detangling Foam into wet hair and blew dry for rough texture, then he used lots of Arrojo Hair Gel to part hair in the center and slick back into a low, tight bun.

MAKEUP: Sarah Lucero for Stila for Beauty.com
HAIR: Oscar Blandi for Beauty.com
NAILS: Deborah Lippmann for Beauty.com

SNAPSHOT: Grunge Goddesses

THE SCOOP:
For her Spring 2010 collection, Julie Haus drew inspiration from Charlie Chaplin and his film “The Circus.” The subtle, vintage-like collection provided the perfect backdrop for an undone, yet sexy look.Lucero conceptualized a look where all the focus was on the eyes. Lucero brought in a bit of spring to a predominately natural face with a heavy, purple eye. “Schleping in color highlights the natural shadows without looking overdone and gives a hint of a smoky eye,” she said. Lippmann continued the grunge appeal by selecting a dark, metal nail lacquer she created with rocker Pat Benatar. Blandi molded the models’ hair into a dirty-clean tussle that he felt was more “avante-garde” than the wet, sleek looks we’ve seen on other runways. Blandi played up the hair’s natural texture by mixing polishing creme and dry shampoo to round out the the subdued, yet sexy look.

GET THE LOOK – MAKEUP: All by Stila. Apply a minimal amount of Natural Finish Oil-Free Makeup and Perfecting Concealer where needed. Sweep lids with Eye Shadow in Bouquet as a base and then brush Eye Shadow in Pigalle on top. To create that rich, purple tone, use the Montemarte Eye Shadow Quad. Layer lashes with Major Lash Mascara in Black or Brown for a clumpy effect and smooth Perfecting Concealer onto lips with a simple balm to complete.

GET THE LOOK – HAIR: All by Oscar Blandi. Use Jasmine Protein Mist to prep the hair. Diffuse. Mix Seta Silk Polishing Creme and Pronto Dry Shampoo to create a strong, piecey look. And finish with Lacca Hairspray for volume and hold.

GET THE LOOK – NAILS: All by Lippmann Collection. File nails down to create a round tip. Apply one coat of “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” and allow time to dry before smudging on a second layer.

MAKEUP: Sarah Lucero for Stila/Beauty.com
HAIR: Ted Gibson for Beauty.com
NAILS:Deborah Lippmann for Beauty.com
SNAPSHOT: Beachy Watercolors

THE SCOOP: At Lela Rose Spring 2010, it was all about the beach. Fluttery fabrics in vibrant brights abounded; for beauty that meant ultra textured hair and watercolor-inspired eye shadows that conjured up a sunset in San Tropez. "The eye makeup is a muted version of the colors in the clothing," said Lucero. "And we're using lots of matte bronzer, so it looks like the girls fell asleep in the sun."

For hair, Gibson was inspired by the wave patterns in the collection. "It's a girl in St. Barth's who's doesn't have time to wash her hair after she' been in the water all morning," said Gibson. When you're at the beach the sun, water and wind all mix together for incredible texture. Gibson recreated that look by putting waves in the hair, then backcombing at the roots and pulling tresses into a low, bushy ponytail.

The manicures were a polished, pretty tone of pinky nude. "We're doing an old fashioned thing by matching the manicure color and pedicure color to the lips," said Lippmann. "Women used to do that with red, but we're modernizing the idea by using a pinky beige shade."

Animal Print Bags - Hot and Affordable!
We've been intrigued by some of the crazy animal print handbags out there, but the high price tags on designer models made us step away from the giraffe pattern. It just seems silly to spend so much money on a bag that you wind up with a pretty, but empty, tote. Lucky for the smart shopping recessionista, Handbag Heaven and their high quality "faux designer" bags make the hottest bag styles affordable and accessible.

The silhouettes of many bags on the site will ring a bell, although they very ethically don't try to pass themselves off as the real thing. And for the animal print lover, it's a gold mine! They have a big selection of giraffe, zebra, snakeskin and cheetah, with contrasting trim, bright accent colors, and for your inner rocker chick, tattoos. And they are all under $100.

Shop now to take advantage of Handbag Heaven's New Year's sale, with 10% off all bags, plus free shipping. Our wish list of favorites in the gallery.

Ann Taylor Celebrates New Look; Rachel Bilson Talks Accessories

Rachel Bilson fêtes Ann Taylor. Photo: Albert Michael, startraksphoto.com

Break out the party hats -- Ann Taylor is one-year new!

Since this was as good a time as ever, the company threw a blowout bash to celebrate its fresh, kind-of-hip status.

With models sporting the Fall 2010 collection, the lobby of Manhattan's uber-cool Ace Hotel was transformed into a lounge filled with hipsters, stunning women, and a few hot celebs ("Mad Men" star Christina Hendricks, her actor husband Geoffrey Arend, and former "OC" star Rachel Bilson).

"I have a vision of the Ann Taylor woman going to Paris and being inspired and influenced by all these new buildings and the chicness of the Parisian women," the brand's head designer, Lisa Axelson, told StyleList.

"Being opened up to a new culture inspires you to think a little differently," which is not unlike the place Axelson is at with the Ann Taylor brand.

"We have one foot rooted soundly in our history, but we're starting to edge forward with fashion and modernism. I like the clash and tension in the building that's going on."

Taking a break from the film-festival circuit, where she's promoting indie flick "Waiting for Forever," Bilson drank in the fashion scene.

The actress was clad in chic fringed short-shorts with an Ann Taylor cardigan and assorted Ann Taylor accessories, including a crystal-studded belt (worn as a necklace).

"I'm a huge clothes person and I'm an even bigger accessories person," Bilson told StyleList. "The accessories are just amazing," she said, gesturing to her belt/necklace. "I'm very excited to start wearing them."

As the evening wore on, singer V.V. Brown took over the room and serenaded the crowd with her dulcet tones. It was not a bad place to be.

Meanwhile, read about how LL Bean is celebrating its 100th anniversary with a sleek new take on longstanding favorites.

Ann Taylor, you are unstoppable.

With your relaunch, edgy fashion and big name models — what could be next? Underwear? Well, as it turns out, yes.

Lingerie brand Eberjey is launching an exclusive line called Bluebird by Eberjey exclusively at Ann Taylor starting Feb. 2. The collection will consist of three groups that will include two bralets, one camisole and nine panty styles available in 10 colors, ranging in price from $16 to $36.

“We are excited to partner with Eberjey and introduce our clients to beautiful, feminine lingerie with gorgeous details and flattering fits. By exclusively carrying Bluebird by Eberjey, we will continue to enhance the Ann Taylor shopping experience and offer another layer of chic, sophisticated style,” an Ann Taylor spokesperson told StyleList.

“This is the first time Ann Taylor is getting into lingerie,” Mariela Rovito, president and co-founder of Eberjey told WWD. “The line is aimed at the existing Ann Taylor customer, but that customer is changing a bit. They are aiming at a different direction and looking at a younger customer.”

And from the looks of the collection, she doesn’t mind being a bit sexy, yet still tastefully feminine.

For a more overtly sexy vibe, see this lingerie company’s topless bikini (as in the swimwear).
